I was hired as an instructor at Northeastern shortly after receiving my MFA in 2008.  The school is situated on the northwest side of Chicago (3600 W. Foster) with a student population of about 12,000 students.  We have a small but strong art community with about 10 Full time faculty, 10 adjuncts, and 200 students.   The last two years I have been teaching a full time load (3 classes, 4 levels) at NEIU with an attentional two classes at another institution (Waubonsee Community College).  The university opened up a national search for a tenure track position this past fall (extra nerve racking for me because I would have lost most of my classes if I did not get the position).  The interviews went quick, but the month from when I had my last interview until I received the offer felt like the longest time of my life.  It was also one of my most productive months (and years) because I was constantly finding things to occupy my mind to not dwell on the future.  I am very excited to begin this new stage in a department and university that I already know and love (it is however bittersweet to be leaving Waubonsee).

Additionally, I want to spread word of three shows I have this upcoming summer.  First, I will have a large piece in the Rockford Midwestern at the Rockford Art Museum, May 18-September 23 (opening Friday, May 18 from 6-7:30).  Second, I have a Solo show at the Center for Photography at Madison’s Steenbock Gallery, May 21-June 22.  And third, a three person show at ROY G BIV Gallery in Columbus, September 1 – 29th.

Finally, I am looking to bring some artists in to Northeastern this fall to give a lecture on their own work and critique student work.  This would be a great opportunity to gain experience and add a line to your resume (but unfortunately I don’t have the funds to pay lecturers at this time, working on it, but I will provide transportation and buy you dinner).  I am hoping to eventualy develop a lecture program and get funding/sponsorship to pay artists in the future.  If you are interested please let me know.

I have been spending a lot of time thinking about night imagery lately and ways to boost up the drama. This is just a sketch, but I like the way that the shadows are cast on the wall like stage lighting and I am curious if I can control a flash enough to paint the light on a more complex architectural form and make what I want stand out and have the rest fade into the black of the night.

Here is something from a few months back that was done with the intention of breaking the formula.  Still thinking about it, but I need to make a print this week and see it in “real” form.  I have been incredibly busy the last couple months so I am finally getting back into a real creative mode.

In case you had not heard, I will be showing work in The Chicago Project IV Exhibition at Catherine Edelman Gallery in Chicago.  The opening reception is this Friday night, July 15th, from 5-8pm.

The exhibition will also include Matt Austin, Justyna Badach, Jeremy Bolen, Dan Bradica, Troy Flinn, Lenny Gilmore, Wm. Bradley Johnson, Bill O’Donnell, TJ Proechel, Charlie Simokaitis and Shane Welch.
